The World Happiness Report/Index is determined by the statistical analysis of global well-being and the factors contributing to happiness worldwide. It is quite tricky to measure happiness. The performance of each country is monitored through different categories, starting from GDP to freedom of choice, social support, generosity of the general population, and corruption levels.
As we have entered 2025, the latest World Happiness Report (WHR) of 2024 reveals significant shifts in rankings and scores in the happiness index. Finland has been taking the spot of the World’s Happiest Country for seven consecutive years, doing it again this year. In contrast, Afghanistan remains one of the least happy countries positioned at rank 143rd out of 143 countries. According to the World Happiness Report, India surprisingly ranks lower compared to many Western nations and some of its neighbouring countries.
In this article, we will provide rankings and scores of all the countries from the happiest to the least happy as per the report. We will also further analyze the factors contributing to their positions.
The World Happiness Report ranks countries based on the citizens’ self-reported happiness levels. The data from Gallup World Poll surveys (2021-2023) is used to determine the happiness ranking. This is called the Cantril ladder. A survey is done where people are asked to rate their lives on a scale from 0 to 10.
For each country around 1,000 survey responses are made. Average Life Evaluation ratings over the past three years are used to determine the score. 6 factors contribute in determining the rankings; the levels of GDP, life expectancy, generosity, social support, freedom, and corruption. The report showcases how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be.
This year, Finland continues to dominate the ranking as the happiest country with a score of 7.74 on a scale from 0 to 10, followed by Denmark and Iceland in second and third place, respectively. Talking about India, it is ranked 126th out of 143 nations in the World Happiness Report (WHR). Afghanistan and Lebanon here hold the last two positions in the report, making them the least happy countries in the world with scores of 1.7 and 2.7, respectively.
Finland, for the 7th year in a row, was ranked as the happiest country by the World Happiness Index. There are many factors leading to this ranking like social support, education and healthcare, and even the level of trust in the government. Thus, global entrepreneurs prefer Finland business setup. The citizens of Finland enjoy a good quality of life, as well as a good relationship with nature, which has much to do with the impressive happiness levels.

The World Happiness Index of 2025 will be shaped by several trends. An increased focus on social stability, environmental protection, and economic equity will play a role in increasing the happiness rankings in countries like Costa Rica, the UAE, and various European states.
Countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh continue to drop in their happiness scores because of political instability, economic crises, and social unrest since reforms have not taken place. However, they may realize the aspirations for a sustainable equitable world for all citizens as restoration and modernization efforts continue to unfold in mitigating climate change, social inequality, and economic instability.
The World Happiness Report for 2024-2025 demonstrates both struggles and opportunities for all countries across the globe. While Scandinavian nations like Finland and Denmark still head the list, nations in the Middle East and Latin America gain importance with improvements in individuals’ livelihoods. On the contrary, countries undergoing political and economic instability, especially in Africa and South Asia, are having a hard time retaining their happiness status.
Current trends indicate that social support, political stability, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability will remain strong facilitators of happiness in the decades to come. While most nations pursue self-happiness and well-being improvement in factors of social support, political stability, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability, the search for happiness and good well-being remains ever-dynamic and evolving. The six factors contributing to the country’s happiness ranking are:· GDP· Life Expectancy· Generosity· Social Support· Freedom· Corruption level
Afghanistan has the lowest Happiness Index in the 2024 World Happiness Report, ranked 143rd out of 143 countries. Its score is significantly impacted by factors such as political instability, social unrest, and limited access to basic services.
The source of data for the happiness ranking is the Gallup World Poll surveys (2021-2023). This is called the Cantril ladder. A survey is done where people are asked to rate their lives on a scale from 0 to 10.
