FSSAI License Renewal Procedure

FSSAI license is a must for every Food Business Operators (FBO) in India. Food Business Operators like Seller, Manufacturers, Transporter, Distributor, Retailers is required to have an FSSAI License before starting any business relating to food items. But, it’s not the end, as getting an FSSAI license is just not sufficient. It is equally important to renew the license at regular intervals before it gets expired. In this article, we will discuss the FSSAI License renewal procedure.

Overview on FSSAI License Renewal

The FSSAI license is usually allotted for a period ranging from 1 year to 5 years. However, the period for which the license is required to be allotted by the FSSAI Authority is chosen by the Food Business Operator. Thus, the license fee increases with an increase in the number of years applied for. The FSSAI guidelines provide that the FBO is required to renew his license within 30 days of the expiration of the existing license.

Application Filing

  • Filing of Form A and B is required for FSSAI License Renewal. FSSAI license Renewal Procedure is 100% online. It has to be filed with the signatures of the authorized signatory. You may also attach a govt. ID with the form. Form A is to be filed for renewal of Basic license whereas Form B is required to be filed for State and Central License.
  • The application for renewal of FSSAI license should contain a Certificate or self declaration regarding Food Safety management System. Such declaration should be given on the letterhead of the FBO according to the prescribed format. 
  • Another requirement for FSSAI license renewal is to fill up the Form no. IX that is the form for nomination of persons.
  •  Also a declaration needs to be filed stating that the food business conducted conforms to the FSS Act[1], hygiene and Sanitary practices. It has to be attached with the application.

Verification

  • On receiving the application, the designated authority shall examine the same and if necessary, inspect the place of establishment/ business premises of the FBO to make sure that the information provided by the FBO is true and fair.

Completion-Renewal of License

  • If the inspector is satisfied, then he shall approve the renewal of the license. The process is completed within a period of 60 days.

Documents needed for renewing your FSSAI License

For FSSAI license renewal the following documents are required:

Basic Registration-

  • ID proof like PAN card, Driving License, Aadhaar card etc.
  • Two passport size photos of applicant;
  • NOC’s by Municipality or Panchayat etc.;
  • Rent Agreement, if any.

State or Central License-

  • Photo and address proof of Proprietor/Partner/Director;
  • Layout plan;
  • List of Directors with their address and contact details;
  • List of food category;
  • NOC from municipality or any local body;
  • IEC documents;
  • Supporting documents as proof of turnover;
  •  A cancelled cheque.

Penalty for Non-Renewal of FSSAI License

If the FBO fails to file the application for renewal of the FSSAI Food license within the prescribed time limit, a penalty of Rs. 100 shall be imposed for each day of delay. If the Food license is not renewed within a specified time, then the license is considered as expired and the FBO has to apply for a fresh license if they wish to continue or restart their business. Hence, it is advisable to renew the FSSAI license within the prescribed time and on a regular basis for avoiding penalties.
