Understanding the ISI Registration Process in India

ISI means Indian Standard Institute. It is a certified mark that is used for industrial items sold in India. The ISI mark assures that the product you are buying is safe to use and of good quality. Various products that we use in our daily life contain this mark. In this article, we shall discuss the ISI registration process.

What is ISI Registration?

ISI mark registration is required for all certifying products sold in India. The meant assures of the quality and safety of the product sold. The product that contains this mark indicates that such products are in compliance with the Indian standard quality. With ISI certification, you can expand your business also.

Bureau of Indian Standards is an authorized body to issue this mark.

Who requires ISI registration?

The following products require this registration:

  • Cement;

  • Stainless steel plate;
  • Packaged drinking water;
  • Stoves;

Process of ISI Registration in India

If you wish to obtain ISI mark registration, then you can follow these steps:

  • Choose the product code

Identify the ISI standard code for your product.

  • File application form

Once the product code is chosen, you will be required to file the registration application form V. Affix all necessary documents with the application form. Then pay the fee as required for the certification and inspection of your factory premises.

  • Inspection of factory premises

When the application is submitted successfully, the inspection team and the persons authorized by the government visit the factory premises. The inspection team and the authorized person shall inspect the factory premises and conduct quality control process. The inspection team shall take some samples of the product and goods for testing it in BIS approved laboratory.

  • Collect the test report

Collect the lab test report of the sample done by the inspection and submit the lab report to the BIS.

  • Issuance of ISI mark registration certificate

After proper verification of the testing report & application form, BIS shall issue a registration certificate.

Documents required for ISI Mark Registration

You are required to submit the following documents as provided below:

  • Registration certificate provided by registrar of companies;
  • Details and copy of sale/lease deed or rent deed on which manufacturing site is located;
  • Copy of insurance policy;
  • Copy of Aadhaar and PAN card of directors;
  • The sample test report tested from a BIS lab or a lab recognized by BIS[1];
  • List of manufacturing machines;
  • Voter ID card;
  • Driving License;
  • Telephone Bill;
  • Electricity Bill;
  • Details of quality control measures;
  • Certificate of bank statement signed by CA.

Benefits of ISI mark

There are a variety of benefits of the ISI mark. Some of the benefits are described below:

  • It adds to the satisfaction of the customer;
  • ISI mark has been in existence since 1955, therefore, is easily recognizable by customer;
  • The mark signifies that the product is of superior quality;

Reasons for rejection of the ISI mark

There are occasions when the BIS may reject the application for ISI mark registration. Some of the reasons include the following:

  • After submission of application where the samples are not submitted for testing;
  • If the samples drawn for testing fail the test;
  • If there is not enough or lack of facilities for testing;
  • If there are not enough technical personnel with the manufacturer;
  • If the firm has not cleared financial dues of the BIS;
  • If the firm hasn’t submitted proper documents or has submitted incomplete documents;
  • If the applicant or the firm indulges in some unethical practice;
  • If there is any major deviation in the manufacturing facility from the declared facility;
  • In case of failure on the part of the manufacturer to help the visiting official during the factory visit;
  • In case of non-conformity in factory testing of the sample product during the second visit.

Before the bureau rejects such an application, it will give a 21 days’ notice to the applicant. The applicant will be heard in person or through a representative. In case where the reasons provided by the applicant are not satisfactory, then the application would be rejected by the bureau.
