Every individual or Food Business Operator in manufacturing, storing, transporting or distributing food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration. The Food Safety and Standards Regulations of 2011 oversee the registration or licencing of the food industry in India. The size and nature of your firm will determine whether you need an FSSAI Registration or FSSAI Licence.

The FSSAI license is to be obtained by any person or entity not classified as a petty food business operator. A person or entity has to get State FSSAI Licence or FSSAI Central licence, depending upon the size and nature of the business, and the licencing authority would change accordingly.
A Central FSSAI Licence is required for all large-scale food producers, processors, transporters, and importers.
And medium-sized manufacturers, processors, or transporters require an FSSAI State Licence.
The application to various sizes of food enterprises, validity periods, documentation requirements, strictness of compliance, and financial repercussions are the technical differences between an FSSAI registration and a licence. Small-scale food firms having annual revenue of up to Rs. 12 lakhs are eligible for FSSAI registration, which has a less stringent compliance requirement and lower fees. The FSSAI licence, however, is necessary for medium- to large-scale food businesses with revenues of more than Rs. 12 lakhs. It includes more extensive documentation requirements, tighter compliance standards, and higher fees. Companies must select the best regulatory approach based on their size and activities in order to ensure food safety and quality. Both methods fulfil this crucial purpose.
