One major advantage of rubber floor mats is that they can be designed and various patterns can be developed on it.   • Vinyl: Vinyl is another matting material made from plastic polymers. The production cost of these mats is very low and hence, they are very affordable. Additionally, vinyl mats also come in various patterns and designs. These patterns/designs increase traction and hence friction on entrances of homes, shops, etc. Also, like rubber vinyl mats also do not absorb water.
  • Carpet fibers: Carpet floor mats features clothing fabrics with tough fibers on the surface and also features excellent sewing patterns. They come in vibrant colors. The major advantage of carpet floor mats is that they are water absorbing. Therefore, they are ideal for use on wet surfaces. These mats are generally used as entrance mats to absorb water from the wet shoes of users. Carpet mats include their backing made from vinyl or rubber mainly for enhancing their durability and quality. They are generally used for decorative purposes because they are very colorful and vibrant and also on wet floors like in bathrooms, etc.

What is the Market Potential of the Rubber Floor mats making Industry in India?

The rubber floor mats can be manufactured using the natural rubber of the synthetic rubber.

In 2016, the market share of the Indian rubber industry was 8.15%, the fourth largest in the world. As per industry sources, the rubber production of the country was 654,000 tons in 2016-17 and was expected to rise by 15% by the end of the financial year 2017-18 touching almost 750,000 tons. In the same year, the consumption percentage of India was 11%, second in the world. About 20920 million tons of rubber was exported in 2016-17.

In 2016, there were about 30 large scale units in the country, about 300 medium scale units and 5600 small scale units involved in rubber production or rubber-related products.

Of the total rubber produced in the country in 2016, less than 10% was used for manufacturing ‘Other’ products including floor mats.

It is expected that by 2020, about 91% of the total natural rubber will be supplied by Asia-Pacific countries. With rising demands for rubber, the demand for rubber made products will also increase.

What are the Mandatory Registrations and Licenses that are Required to Start a Rubber floor Mat Making Industry?

Government Registrations:-

  1. Company Registration with ROC, India – as per the rule of the land, all business entities need the certificate of incorporation from the Registrar of companies to start work. It requires detailed documentation to obtain this certificate. The Memorandum of Association along with Articles of Association which mention the specifications relating to the organization is of the most important documents that need to be submitted to have the certificate issued.
  2. Trade License from the local body. The Trade License permits a particular business to operate form a certain area – hence authorization is required from the local municipal authority to start functioning.
  3. Factory license for registering the factory. The license is issued by the Chief Inspectorate of Factories. This license needs to be renewed on a yearly basis.
  4. Udyog Aadhaar MSME registration can be applied online at udyogaadhaar.gov.in[1] by small and medium scale manufacturing units. Once the Aadhaar number is received the business set-up becomes eligible to take benefit from various schemes offered by the Ministry of MSME. The Ministry’s main responsibility lies in helping develop the growth of small enterprises and protect by helping them with subsidies and other benefits.
  5. No objection certification or a consent form from the State Pollution Control Board
  6. GST Registration can also be applied online. It is mandatory for certain businesses to get themselves registered under GST.
  7. Licenses:-

ISO Certification – through this certification is more to do with the discretion of the manufacturer, it is a good idea to be able to use the ISO certified logo on the product as it conveys to the buyer – industrial or domestic, national or international – that the quality of the product is high and the manufacturing process has followed international regulations and standards.
  9. Import Export Code the business intends to export the floor mats to the international market. The IEC code is a ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade[2]. The Directorate’s main task is to promote India’s exports. The application for obtaining the code can be filled online. Without the IE code, businesses cannot clear customs or receive/send money abroad. The Import-Export code can be obtained on an individual’s name also in case the business entity is not incorporated yet. This is one code that does not require renewal.
