Organic food, as defined by Section 22 of the Food\nSafety and Standardization Act, 2006, means the food products which are\nproduced in accordance with the specified standards for organic production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does Section 22 of the FSS Act\nSpecify?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 22\nof the Food Safety and Standardization Act, 2006 gives regulations for\n&ldquo;Genetically modified foods, organic foods, functional foods, proprietary\nfoods, etc.&rdquo; It specifies that no person or entity is allowed to sell,\ndistribute, manufacture, import any novel foods, genetically modified foods,\norganic foods, functional foods, irradiated foods, foods for particular dietary\nuses, nutraceuticals, health supplements, or any other such food articles as\nnotified by the Central Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Government bodies involved in Providing\nPermissions to Organic Food Businesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India keep an eye on the organic businesses and ensure that these businesses get the two systems of certification. Namely, the Participatory Guarantee System {PGS} provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterslice.com\/national-program-organic-production-npop-certification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"National Program for Organic Production (opens in a new tab)\">National Program for Organic Production<\/a> {NPOP} supplied by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. These two certification systems are supervised under the Food Safety and Standards {Organic Food} Regulations by the FSSAI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Participatory Guarantee System or\nPGS is an internationally recognized organic quality assurance such as the ISO\n9000, which is implemented and controlled by the committed organic\nfarmer\/producers by active participation with the consumers, in a process which\nis based on absolute trust. In other words, we can say that PGS is a\ncertification scheme for organic foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National\nProgram for Organic Production is a certification scheme for organic farmers.\nIt was initiated to assist the organic farmers in flourishing in both the\ndomestic and the international markets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Labeling of Organic Foods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is\nmandatory for every organic product to contain the India Organic Certificate on\nall of its outer packaging.&nbsp; The entity\nshould voluntarily get the India Organic logo for their products. As per the\nFood Safety and Standards {Packaging and Labelling} Regulations, 2011, the\ncontents of labels of the food product should be as follows;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Name of the food product, ingredients &amp; their nutritional\nvalues<\/li><li>Any food additives included in the food product<\/li><li>Whether the food product is veg\/non-veg<\/li><li>Net quantity<\/li><li>Lot no.\/ code no.\/ batch no.<\/li><li>Date of manufacture<\/li><li>Date of expiry<\/li><li>Instructions to use {If applicable}<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents needed to Start an Organic\nFood Business in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Organic food\nbusinesses in India get the following type of food license from the FSSAI that\nis valid for five years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterslice.com\/fssai-registration\">FSSAI Registration<\/a><\/strong> for companies having turnover less than Rs. 12 lakhs <\/li><li>FSSAI State license for businesses having turnover more than Rs. 12 lakhs<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/enterslice.com\/learning\/fssai-central-license\/\"><strong>FSSAI Central license<\/strong><\/a> for businesses having a turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crores<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Such food\nbusinesses need to take state license from their respective state governments.\nAlso, they need permissions from the health departments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfollowing documents are needed to apply for the food license;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Any of these ID proofs:<ul><li>PAN Card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Aadhar Card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Voter ID Card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ration Card<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Business Agreement<\/li><li>Memorandum of Association<\/li><li>Articles of Association<\/li><li>No Objection Certificate {NOC}<\/li><li>Bank statements<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the\nnew laws for selling of organic products, it is mandatory for entities to get\nthe following certifications also;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>National Program for Organic Production { NPOP }<\/li><li>Participatory Guarantee System of India { PGS India}<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Government Initiatives to Promote\nGrowth of Organic Food Business in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfollowing initiatives are taken by the Government of India to promote and help\nflourish the organic sector;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Government of India formulated the Participatory Guarantee System to give subsidies to small farmers backed by the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikash Yojana Scheme{PKVY}<\/li><li>In 2017, the government launched the Jaivik Bharat logo and the India Organic Integrity Database Portal to help organic farmers and associated food businesses<\/li><li>The FSSAI also have relaxed certification norms for individuals and organizations having an annual income of less than 12 lakhs to promote organic farming<\/li><li>Also, the government has stated that the organizations having turnover less than Rs. Fifty lakhs to sell organic food products without getting certification from NPOP\/ PGS India.
