Less obvious but nonetheless important are the effects of today’s
lifestyles in the developed world on nutritional status. There are increased
food choices, yes, but low micro-nutrient densities. The hectic pace of life
can lead to inadequacies in the diet, so that even in well-endowed societies
people are increasingly looking to fortified foods to make up the deficiencies.

Food fortification has for one reason or the other emerged as a <g class="gr_ gr_16 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" id="16" data-gr-id="16">non</g>– complicated way to improve the nutritional value of a diet.

It has been applied for decades to improve the nutritional status of target populations in various countries by adding value to simple, affordable staple foods. Scientific Health Claims for label declaration of fortified foods approved by the Scientific Panel on Nutrition and Fortification were also released. With the regulations being notified in the Gazette of India, FSSAI has firmly placed food fortification on the national agenda.
