It helps to promote transparency in the working of the Government. As per the RTI 2005, the Government of India is liable to provide the information asked by the Citizens. However, in the case of failing to do so, the authority will be penalized. The RTI Act applies all over India except Jammu and Kashmir, as it has its own RTI Act.

In this blog, we will learn how to file an RTI online application and other aspects relating to it.

What Information can we seek through RTI online Application?

The objective of RTI online is to allow the citizens to demand the information from government authorities which includes contracts, circulars, records, reports, memos, papers, emails, documents and all other information consolidated in print or electronic form.

Even so, there are certain sections of administrative activities which do not come under the RTI Act. One of the highlights of the RTI Act 2005 is to empower the citizens to inspect the records physically that have been preserved by the government and its administrative bodies.

Who can seek Information through RTI?

All Indian citizens can ask for information through RTI online. Citizens can ask for the inspection of the work and activities of the government or can simply exercise their right to know the information. To be the valid applicant to ask the information through RTI, you just need to be a citizen who wants to inspect records of governing and administrative bodies.

How to ask for Information through RTI?

To exercise your right to Information, you just need to fill an application with a Central Public Information Officer (CPIO). There is a CPIO with all the administrative levels of the government that provides all the required information to people who file an application or a query under the RTI Act. Online facility of filing the RTI application is available for Central Public Authorities and a limited number of State Public Authorities.

Exemption of information under the RTI

RTI (right to information) doesn’t provide the absolute right to the Indian citizen to seek information. The RTI Act, 2005 exempts a certain kind of information under the ambit of RTI. Such exemptions are provided in Section 8, Section 9 and the second schedule of Right to Information Act, 2005.

How can you file RTI online to central Public Authorities?

You can file the RTI online as well as offline. But, an online facility is limited to a few authorities only. Let’s take a look at the steps to be followed to file the application of RTI.

STEP 1: Visit the Online RTI Portal

The first step is to visit the online portal of RTI.
